Founded in 2010 as DOMES Awards, the Greek Architecture Awards are organised by DOMa, an independent institution for contemporary architecture based in Athens. Over the years, the Awards have established themselves as the most important architecture competition in Greece, with critically-acclaimed architects of international renown like David Chipperfield and Toyo Ito having participated in the jury.
Our design for the 2020 catalogue is inspired by calendar design. The cover depicts the competition’s year, designed using the modular Galapagos A Grid font by Dinamo. The unique characteristic of this font is that each glyph is made using a system of 40 elements that can be repeated in different ways and combinations to create an entire alphabet. The elements are contained within a square grid, which makes for a very architectural visual result.
Part of the design concept is also the choice of wire binding, which is often used in calendars; this makes handling a publication of such a large volume easier and allows for turning the pages using only one hand.
Each project is presented across six pages, with two full pages dedicated to its photographic documentation. The remaining four pages are half-width, to give the impression that they are enclosed within the photography spread, and contain all the technical drawings and information. Different kinds of paper have been used for each page type, clearly separating each work from the next.
