The Festivals of Athens and Epidaurus appointed us to design the visual album “Χώροι σε Αναμονή” (Marking Time), which was published in late 2020 and depicts the theaters of the festival during the pandemic.
The empty spaces of the festival, shot by Michalis Kloukinas, hold dramaturgic conversations through selected excerpts from theatrical plays of the international repertoire, which were part of the artistic programming of the festival that wasn’t actualized.
The album “Venues in Waiting” is a collectible publication that features the favorite spaces of the festival (Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, Ancient Epidaurus little theater, Herodion theater and Peiraios Street 260), as a tangible and valuable element of the live spectacle that the pandemic has denied us.
The cover constitutes a visual representation of the title. A square symbolizes the space, though not completed and waiting to be activated again by the public. A small gap on its outline shows exactly that: it hasn’t gone full circle and through the crack it remains in contact with the outside, the audience and society.
The layout is free. Graphics work supplementarily with the picture and the text aiming to give prominence to them, while also play their own part in the completion of the meaning in each spread. The white spaces, the gaps, the formulated rows, they all comprise elements completing the narrative and contributing to an emotional tension, which the album aims to.
